Types Of Cough


1-Non productive or dry cough: this type annoys patient and prevents his rest and sleep


2-productive cough(useful cough) : it effectively expels secretions or exudates from respiratory tract



Treatment

1-ANTITUSSIVES

reduce frequency and intensity of cough

Type 1-peripheral antitussives

a-Demulcents as liquorice lozenges and linctuses

b-steam inhalation of tincture benzoin co. or menthol

Type 2-central antitussives

these drugs suppress cough by inhibition of cough center

most of these drugs are morphine derivatives and are classified into

Narcotic and Non narcotic
